+1 on the nurses, but I think a lot of cops are good people too. I think it's important to remember that we rarely see good news on the news. The media aren't scrambling to show us footage of police officers consoling victims or solving crimes or risking their lives to protect people, but it happens every day.
In researching for this piece I also discovered that America's police force represents the diversity of the country pretty well. White people are overrepresented, but not by much. Black people make up around 12% (vs 13.4% in the population).
The biggest problem I see, which you mention, is that the police are allowed to close ranks and protect each other when there's a problem. That needs to change. Once there are serious and consistent consequences for bad actions, a lot of these other problems become less of a concern.
