Acttually I think this is an excellent question. Let's leave COVID in the mix because it's put a strain on everybody's mental health, but let's imagine it came from Europe. From what we know, I'd say it's very likely he would have done the same thing.
We know his sex addiction predates any anti-Asian sentiment that came from COVID. We know he was trying to remove the source of his sexual temptations, which are unrelated to COVID and his religious extremism, again, predates it.
But none of that is the point. I'm not protesting AT ALL. I'm aware that Asians are being targeted, I think it's awful, that doesn't mean that this case is driven by the same motives. That's all I'm saying. I'm not the least bit invested in the idea that it WASN'T racially motivated, I'm simply saying that rushing to racial narratives risks giving us the wrong picture.
This was also the point of my George Floyd comparison. Also, the cases themselves are wildly different (yes I'm aware that racial disparities in policing are an issue for black people thank you😅). But the harm caused in Minneapolis was a direct result of the innacurate racial narrative that was created.
Race is a hugely emotive and politicised topic. As soon as we rush to it, we risk obscuring all other factors. So the sensible thing to do, at least in my opinion, is what for the tiniest bit of evidence that that's what we're seeing.
