Again, I think the issue is more what the leaders of the West should have done. What if the West had imposed these severe sanctions when Putin levelled Grozny? Or annexed Crimea? Or invaded Georgia? Or committed war crimes in Syria? Or poisoned a critic on UK soil with a nerve agent? What if Bush and Blair had faced any consequences at all for ignoring international law and killing thousands of Iraq civilians?

Putin has been pushing for decades. Just as Hitler did. And he’s led us slowly and inexorably towards war. Just as Hitler did. There comes a point where war is simply unaviodable. The entire purpose of organisations like the UN is to take action before that point is reached. Preferably long before.
