Either you don't know what the birther movement was or you don't understand what criticism is. Obama faced his fair share of criticism. I've got no issue with that. However the Birther movement played on the suggestion that he wasn't American at all and therefore didn't have the right to be president. It absolutely wasn't legitimate.

The notion that he could have become a senator, never mind President of the United States, without countless people verifying his status and eligibility is laughable unless you can't quite wrap your head around a black man being president.
