God, I hate this argument so much.
Are you able to figure out whether it's okay to shout "Kill all the Jews" to millions of people? Or "White people are inveterate racists who must be purged from society"? Or "Many people are saying that VolkColopatrion is a child molester and somebody should definitely look into that"?
The idea that because there are legitimate grey areas around what constitutes misinformation or hate speech or slander, we are incapable of setting any standards whatsoever about where the line should be drawn, especially for elected officials, is just so painfully asinine.
I'm not talking about banning books. I'm talking about figuring out how to deal with a world where almost anybody can anonymously and instantly reach millions of people with whatever insane, hateful or divisive garbage tickles their solitary brain cell.
Almost all of us are "good enough" to understand context and nuance and the concept of evidence. And those who can't understand these things are exactly the people who desperately need someone to point out that the information they're uncritically consuming might not be reliable.
