Haha, no, I’m not saying it’s hopeless at all. I’m cursed with an optimistic outlook on society. I’m just saying that the simplicity or complexity of the charge isn’t the issue.
If Loehmann had been convicted of murder but could be shown to be less likely to be convicted if you added hate crime charges, I’d be 100% with you. But that’s not what happened. The conviction should have been elementary, but even without the added layer of a hate crime, it wasn't. There's a deeper problem with the system.
So I’m saying I don’t think you’ve demonstrated that hate crime laws reduce the risk of conviction. I think everybody with a soul agrees that Loehmann should have been charged with murder. As I said, I don’t personally think he should have been charged with a hate crime. And he wasn’t. But of course, he was always likely to get away because he’s a police officer.
