Hi Dan! Well, there are two points here. First of all, if you were the CEO of a major social network, you would be able to squelch that speech. There’s no hypothetical here. As things currently stand, that’s the situation. Whether that’s a good thing is a subject I hope there are serious discussions about over the coming weeks and months. Personally I don’t think it is.
But second of all, I absolutely hear your concern. I share it. I think we should tread very, very lightly around free speech. I’m arguing that outright lies shouldn’t be protected under free speech, by which I mean they should be removed from a public platform when identified. I’m not talking about suppressing opinions I disagree with, I think the purge of right-wing Twitter going on right now is really troubling as much as I disagree with those people. But allowing lies to spread to the extent that social media can spread them can’t be a good thing can it? Is there any case to be made for that?
