Hmm, first of all, who are these many comedians? I think everybody in the public eye in 2021 is acutely aware that they don't have blanket immunity from criticism. But it does seem that some people think they should get (and do get) blanket immunty from criticism if they hide behind the banner of a marginalised group.

Take a look at what JK Rowling has been put through over the past year and then read the post (linked in the article) that started it all. Where's the accountability for the hordes of people sending her death threats and hate? Again, I'm asking why the sense of outrage is so selective.

But more to the point, where do you think the limits on speech should be placed? A few months ago, Milo Yiannopoulos made some comment about how dogs don't bark at him anymore because he no longer has sex with black men.

Do I find that offensive? Well, actually no, because I don't take Milo seriously enough for anything he says to offend me. But of course I do understand why some people might find it offensive.

But do I think he should still be allowed to say it? Absolutely! I want everybody to get a good look at who he is and make up their minds for themselves. I want him to receive all the feedback his comments deserve in the vain hope that he will reflect and come out a better person. I have absolutely no fear that his comments will appeal to anybody who wasn't already racist. He's not convincing anybody by saying things like that. He's just pandering to his (dwindling) fanbase.

Chappelle is clearly frustrated at the current trend of hypersensitivity and it comes across clearly in the special. To be honest, I think it's the weakest of them all. But I think the reasons he's frustrated are valid.

In all the furore about how transphobic the show is, the fact that he spends time arguing against NCs bathroom bill was completely ignored. The obviously joking refences to him being a "transphobic comedian" were taken seriously. All of this precisely because people watched a comedy special looking for things to be offended at rather than to laugh at.

I'd be very happy for you to tell me what I'm missing
