Hmm, yeah, the answer to this is long and complex. Suffice to say first of all that many don't. I think the majority of people of colour expect to be held to the same standards as everybody else.

But amongst young people in particular, there's intense social influence to think of oneself as a victim. There's pressure to think of oneself as somebody who deserves special concessions in life. There is, as I said, the idea that academic excellence isn't authentic for people of colour. And, of course, there are social and economic and institutional factors which do create performance gaps in education.

The problem is that solutions like these couldn't be more obviously counterproductive as ways to fix these problems.
