I completely agree. But as your example shows, that choice isn't based on sexism so much as what briings in the money.

Beyonce's backup dancers are very likely better dancers than she is, but she's up front because she's Beyonce.

In an ideal world, Medium's priority is surfacing the best writing, but in reality it's about bringing in the most subscribers. Sometimes those two aims overlap but clearly sometimes they don't.

Is it a shame that people will choose popularity over quality? Yes, absolutely. But that's a separate issue.
