I completely agree with this. The problem is, if two police officers approach your car shouting threats with their guns drawn, your fear is very likely going to override your willingness to comply.

If the officers had spoken calmly instead of yelling, if, by the time they realised that he wasn't a threat, which to be honest was fairly quickly (they saw the temporary tag almost immediately), if the officer hadn't said he was "fixing to ride the lightning", if when Guttierez put his gun away (again, fairly early on), I think this might all have gone very differently.

But I think it's important to remember that it's not the civilian's job to de-escalate. Nazario didn't do anything wrong, and was well within his rights to stay in the car.
