I don't have statistics for 2022 sadly, but in the latest figures available from the FBI (2019) there were 7964 homicides. 4078 of which were committed by black people. That is 51.2%. Call it half.

You've already been kind enough to provide the percentage of black Americans in the U.S. population.

That's statistically significant too. Wouldn't you agree?

I hate these context-free police shooting numbers because they force me to repeatedly point out that some of the reasons black people are more likely to encounter the police have nothing to do with racism. If you commit a disproportionate amount of crime, you encounter a disproportionate amount of policing. And if that policing is done by vicious, unaccountable bullies, you encounter a disproportionate amount of police brutality.

This is actually central to my point. I'm not denying that there's racism within the police force. Not at all. I'm saying that police brutality and racism are separate issues. And it's in everybody's interest, particularly black people, to address the brutality. Even if you completely purged racism from the police, you'd still have a brutality problem. I'd rather purge brutality and have to deal with the higher likelhood of traffic stops.
