I have mixed feelings on how to take this. On the one hand nobody likes a bragger. I hope it's clear that I'm not saying you're a bragger. I don't know you. But because I don't know you, I don't know what you mean when you talk about proclaiming your successes.

I don't think a sense of racial superiority is the only explanation for disliking when somebody "proclaims their successes" as I envision it.

But on the other hand, I've absolutely also encountered people who were surprised by my intelligence or my competence for reasons that I couldn't explain in any other way than the colour of my skin. So I have no problem believing that's what's behinf your "friends'" behaviour. I guess, in my case, those people wouldn't be my friends anymore.

Unfortunately, I think tribalism and unconscious bias are going to be with us for a while. And maybe I'm wrong or naive here, but I don't really care about the microaggressions of people who don't like hearing about my success. I want to see black people thriving. I want evidence that the impact of past oppression is fading on a societal level. The discomfort of people insecure enough to be threatened by that is very low on my list of priorities.
