I think that a lot of people have gone this route, and I understand why, but the more I think about it, the more I think this still doesn't help.

Once upon a time, "man/woman" were simply words for an adult human male/female. We built stereotypes around these biological realities, gradually realised this was a stupid thing to do, and tried to detach man and woman from their biological moorings. But as a result, we're stuck between a kind of biological denialism (men can get pregnant), and gender essentialism (a boy who likes "girl" things is literally a girl).

I wish we could just embrace the concept of masculine women and feminine men. Masculine women certainly can get pregnant after all. Or, more simply, that the range of behaviours that it's acceptable for men and women to exhibit takes in the entire human range.

But the stumbling block to this is actually trans people. Or rather the desire of trans people to be seen and treated as literally the sex they identify as. The mismatch they feel has become a mismatch that we're all trying to figure out how to best accommodate. It's that tension between kindness, practicality, and biological reality that makes this so fraught.
