I think that's a simplistic way of looking at it. How often do you think most people try something genuinely new? Not just a new version of a thing they already like, but really push themselves out of their comfort zone?
When's the last time you moved to a new country or went to a party where you didn't know a single person? When's the last tine you ate something you'd never tried anything similar to or immersed yourself in a genre of music that you didn't immediately like?
Most people simply aren't wired to seek out this kind of novelty. The variety we have in our lives is actually very limited but most of us simply don't notice. Max was extreme in his tendency to stick to what he knows, no doubt, but he's not by any means alone.
