I think the point is that the raising of doubt can go on forever. If the machines are found to be fine then the question becomes “well who inspected them?” If another team of trusted people inspects them and finds nothing it’s “well how do we know they didn’t cover their tracks by now?” On and on.

This erosion of the ability to accept anything that doesn’t conform to what you want to be true has been dramatically advanced under Trump. It’s not Trump himself that anyone should be afraid of, it’s the way he’s attacked the concept of facts and truth. Without those foundations were all lost.
