I want to compare all instances of discrimination with all other instances of discrimination. I know it’s shocking in today’s political landscape, but I do my best to be ideologically and morally consistent regardless of whose “side” is at fault.
But that said, you’re not comparing like with like here.
Refusing somebody service because they’re openly carrying alcohol is not the same as refusing them service because they’re gay or Chinese or Christian. There are lots of private businesses where you’re not allowed to bring alcohol inside. This is discrimination against alcohol. Not against people. It’s comparable to “No shoes, no shirt, no service.”
In the case of the cake shop and the lunch counters, they were discriminating against people. This is comparable to “No dogs, Irish or ni**ers.”
Not all discrimination is equal. We discriminate all the time with regard to what people do and how they dress. There are reasonable conversations to be had about how fair this is sometimes. But it’s not at all the same as discriminating against somebody for who they fundamentally are.
