I'm not at all convinced this is true, though I think it's the problem with this case.

Almost everybody, from the safety of their everyday lives, knows what they would do in a crisis situation. They know what the best course of caution is, how much pressure to apply, how to avoid the bullets.

If these analyses were to be believed, nobody would ever be hurt in a mass shooting or any crime where there were witnesses ever again. But we know this isn't true.

We know, when people are asked what they'd do if there were a mass shooting in their town, that the main answer isn't "run for cover" or "hide" or "film on my phone." But we know that's what most people actually do.

Very few people are as brave as they'd like to believe. Which is worth considering when somebody is brave imperfectly.
