I'm not saying that everybody who liked the special liked every second. I'm not saying Dave's fans can't disagree with him. I've disagreed with him numerous times just in this conversation. My point continues to be, you're saying the joke "fell flat" when this is clearly not the case. Not least because you're literally the only person I've seen criticising it. Most of the criticism I've seen has focused on Adam's apples.
I'm sure other people have criticised it, as we agree, it's worthy of criticism, but there is a point benig artlessly made within it. I think most people got that point, even if they didn't see the problem with the way it was delivered.
Sorry, I have a standing policy not to read anything published in "An Injustice". It is a rag in the truest sense of the word. All it does is irritate me. But please don't take that to mean I haven't read trans people's perspectives on the special. I've read, and personally spoken to, numerous trans people to understand their perspective. Opinon is, unspuprisingly, divided.
But the trans communties feelings are irrelevant to the third point, which is that when Dave has millions of people critiquing his work, both positively and negatively, it's wholly unreasonable to expect him to personally respond to what they're saying. If he was slamming the trans community for criticisng him, but ignoring the people saying bigoted things off the back of his special, you'd have a stronger case. But he hasn't said anything, except to clearly affirm that he isn't in conflict with the trans community.
And just an aside, there's no such thing as "celebrity privilege". This is a misunderstanding of the entire concept of privilege. Privilege is about things that are unearned and innate. Celebrity, at least in Dave's case, is neither of these things.
Dave has worked his ass of for decades to reach the position he's in. A position which is contingent on the fact that millions of people appreciate what he has to say. We shouldn't normalise this idea that anybody who has more money than us or a bigger reach than us is "privileged". It smacks of jealousy and resentment. There is such a thing as merit.
But no apology necessary for misreading. Most people are faaar less polite when they do so 😅 As I said, time will tell how the activists move forward from here. I'd genuinely love for them to prove me wrong.
