Maybe we're agreeing but just talking past each other here. The section I've highlighted here makes it clear that he was talking about the check (promissory note) the founding fathers wrote in the form of the constitution. They were, of course, white. So in that sense he was talking about white men.

But that doesn't mean he's talking about ALL white men or "white America". In the broader "white people you all suck", sense, the section I quoted in my last comment makes it crystal clear he's not doing this. He's in solidarity with white people who are in solidarity with the cause of fighting racism. He isn't holding all white people responsible for the failures of the system. He even dreams of a day when former slave owners can sit on brotherhood with former slaves. He's explicit about this.

If King wanted to say that white America had breached its promise I'm sure he'd have had no problem saying exactly that. He certainly wouldn't have found himself short of support within the black community. Malcolm X certainly had no problems saying it.

He didn't say this because it wasn't what he meant. He resisted the temptation to condemn all white people for the sins of some of them, for which I have endless admiration for him. Especially when you consider the world he was living in. I do my best to do the same. As I said, maybe we're just talking past each other. I can't really see how we're disagreeing. The words are right there.
