Murder is a good example of a crime driven by hopelessness. Or the sense that you have nothing to lose. Or an environment where you have to fight to hold on to what you have or to get what somebody else has.

All of which are fairly well correlated with poverty. And when we're talking about "black crime," when we're talking about shootings in Chicago or South Central, we're talking about people who very closely match this description in one or all senses.

So I think it's actually the "comfortable life" part of that reply that's most relevant. Black people are disproportionately represented in this category. And it's a much better category to look at in terms of addressing the problem.
