No, I didn't know this. And this is one of those impossible to contextualise pieces of information because a) nobody but Amy knows the impact her rape had on this situation, and b) it's very difficult to question it's legitimacy without seeming to minimise rape (which I hope it's obvious I would never do).
But I'll just say that yes, it's very difficult to consider this a significant factor given her aggressive behaviour during the encounter. Christian doesn't approach her at any point. Not once. In fact, he asks her numerous times not to get close to him and she does so anyway. She then physically attacks him. She then tells him ahead of time that she's going to call the police and lie about him. It's just absolutely preposterous to argue that these are the actions of somebody who fears for their life.
As for the 9/11 call, yes, I’ve also heard that the line was bad. But if anything, that makes her behaviour even less understandable. When you’re on a call and the line is bad, do you typically start speaking more quickly and quietly? Or do you speak more loudly and clearly?
It also doesn’t in any way explain her repeated mention of his race (remember, she also does this before the call). Nor does it explain why she’s speaking with “growing urgency” despite there being absolutely no danger or threat from Christian. Nor does it explain why, when she called back later, when Christian wasn’t even there, she lied that he had tried to physically assault her (sadly I only learned this after writing the article. This is also why the police filed charges. Nothing to do with the Floyd case).
I must admit I’m truly baffled and quite saddened by the people who are twisting themselves in knots trying to find an angle to defend her behaviour. It's one thing to be tired of people crying racism when it's not there. I share that frustration. But blindly refusing to see racism when it's smacking you in the face is incredibly frustrating. I mean, in the conversation you're joining here, Penguin is so determined to defend Cooper that he's ended up defending would-be rapists. Seriously, what are we doing here?!
