No, people who are biased and invested in a certain narrative have argued disingenuously. I'm a fan of Contrapoints, I've watched her entire one-and-a-half-hour video on Rowling numerous times. It is not an honest look at the letter. Not at all. It's also the most uncharitable and disingenuous possible interpretation of Rowling's motives and thoughts.
As I said, I'm a fan of hers, but this was terrible work. I could tear that video to shreds without breaking a sweat. Not because Natalie isn't smart, she certainly is, but because despite her claim at the beginning, she's not even trying to be fair.
Yes, I've seen LGBT people attacked too. I've seen black people attacked too. And yes, you're right to assume I don't condone or approve of that. I'm firmly against all hatefulness and violence. I didn't say there are no hateful people in the world. I know first-hand that there are. I said the overwhelming majority are not hateful. And included Rowling and Rogan in that.
Lastly I didn't say psychopath, I said sociopath. There's a difference. And only if you'd be tempted to describe the horrendous abuse levelled against women by some members of the trans community as them "standing up for themselves." I also wouldn't describe abuse directed at trans people as standing up for women's rights.
I don't see empathy as a zero-sum game. I don't think I'll run out if I have empathy for trans people and for Rowling, or for white people and for black people. It's the idea that we can only be kind to "our side" that causes so much of the toxicity we're currently living though.
