Nope. I didn't say this. You can't force somebody to commit suicide. By definition. But you can exhibit a wildly disproportionate level of cruelty and malice that impacts somebody's mental wellbeing.

Isn't the trans community always eager to point out that trans people commit suicide at disproportionately high rates because of the abuse they face? I think that's a worthwhile point. But why does that same concern not apply to the viciousness of some of the members of the trans community? Does Daphne not count because she wasn't expressing the right opinion? Shouldn't we be angry about her treatment too? Whoever it came from?

I don't think we can hold Dave responsible for the decisions of the leadership in his state. Should he move out if they implement legislation that doesn't support trans people? But I will point out that Dave actually speaks out against North Carolina's anti-trans bathroom bill during the special. I haven't seen that fact appear in any of the articles calling him transphobic.

Dave clearly doesn't understand the issues perfectly. That whole "gender is a fact" section for example was a bit of a disaster. But it's ridiculous to argue that these mistakes are fuelled by hatred or will lead to the death of trans people.

Part of the reason these misunderstandings occur is that there's a population of trans people so determined to shut down conversation that isn't wholly affirming of their world view that they haven't stopped to think how damaging it is to the way trans people are perceived by society in general.

Most people don't have any personal contact with trans people. So conversation is the only way they can learn. If they're constantly being told that any disagreement with trans ideas about sex and gender (which are also often terribly poorly informed) is transphobic bigotry that they should be cancelled for, they'll be pushed to hard line positions I'm sure they wouldn't otherwise take.

As I said in the article, disagreement is inevitable. But thank you for doing so reasonably and politely. This is how we come together.
