Of course I agree with this. But you posed a hypothetical about human nature that we can only answer with the data available. And those data suggest that yes, overhwelmingly, cops are good.

Cops are human beings. We have to wrap our heads around this. They put themselves in difficult, dangerous situations where a split-second decision is the difference between life and death. Theirs and that of civilians.

This absolutely guarantees that mistakes will be made and the questions are a) how do we minimise them and b) what do we do when they happen? The fact that we don't have satisfactory answers to these questions is a huge problem. I couldn't agree more. In fact, i agree so completely that I wrote this article.

I'm black, and I'll say very clearly that the narrative of police officers roving the streets looking for black people to kill is false and ultimately harmful to black people. Treating all police officers as the enemy and convincing young black men that they need to be combative and on edge every time they interact with one will lead to more black people dying.
