Yeah, you're right, I think this attitude is also what drives the "why do you care?" response some people have. There's this veneer of concern in society. We're good, collectively, at proclaiming our opposition to all kinds of societal problems. But when it comes to sticking one's neck out even the tiniest bit, too many people just look the other way.

And when these issues get politicised, those same people would rather defend the indefensible than think for themselves.
