Police patrols are instituted in every country in the world. Whatever their links to America's history of slavery, it's fair to say that that's not the reason patrols exist today. A visible police presence is also proven to lead to a decrease in crime.

To give just one example, the last llnk in the article points to a story about Minneapolis city council who committed to abolishing the police last year. Patrol officers left the force in droves, crime soared, more civilians died, and in the end, the council had to commit extra funding to try to increase the number of police on the streets.

There are doubtless ways in which the police systmem could be improved, but getting rid of police patrols probably isn't one of them.
