Read the link that accompanies this line. There are, of course, examples of people being thought of differently because of the colour of their skin (the caste system is a good example), but this wasn't racism as we understand it today.

Darker skin was a signifier of lower standing back then because lower castes spent their days outside in the sun. Not because of any imagined genetic differences or "racial" separation.

Racism as we think of it now was a deliberate invention designed to justify keeping slaves. I don't mean to minimise other forms of bigotry by pointing this out, just thought I'd take the opportunity to teach people about this aspect of racism as a concept

It's my first time reading Mystal's work, so I'm not judging him in any wider context. But this article was trash. And regardless of his intelligence (in fact, if he's intelligent enough to know better, it makes matters worse), he should have had the integrity not to write it. If he'd decided to call his article "I'm Not Ready To Reenter A *Racist* Society", and targeted racism instead of everybody who happens to have white skin, I might still be looking for my first example.
