I'm not arguing against prevention or vigilance, of course. I'm saying that having your knee-jerk reaction every time you hear about a crime be to blame the victim of that crime, even without knowing much about the specifics, is dumb.

Both punishment and prevention are important. And prevention is a broad church that goes beyond simply asking the victim to never leave the house with anything valuble on them.
