There isn't one neat answer to this question unfortunately. At least not one that I have. But we know that treating people like human beings works. We know that reason and good-faith conversation works. We know that understanding problems as accurately as possible works.

We've become incredibly bad at all of these as our discourse has become more toxic. And I think at least part of the path back to sanity is for each of us to take personal responsibility for this fact and try to do a better job in our own small ways. As I said, even seemingly insignificant acts can change the world for the better.

The division I think mainly comes from the fact that people have given up on really trying to understand each other or think for themselves. Politics has become like supporting a sports team instead of trying to make society aa better place.
