This is a great point. We often get a very skewed picture of racial issues because they absolutely aren’t reported equally.
I think hate crime legislation has its place. It protects minorities from people who target others purely because of their race, and raises the punishment for crimes that might otherwise come with minor punishments if they include that racial component.
There’s a difference between somebody who has a bad day, punches a random guy, and gets a fine or whatever. And somebody who goes out looking for people of colour or LGBT people or some other group specifically, and attacks them.
The average person isn’t committing assaults like this at all. The laws exist for the outliers.
