This is actually one of my biggest probelms with the DiAngelos of the world. Where is the meaningful stuff? Please point it out to me? Where is the activism and discussion aimed at actual progress and change?

Changing the name of a neighbourhood? Great. I presume the resistance was more about human resistance to any change than a particular desire to honour a slave owner, but yes, I can completely understand why some residents were bothered by it. But that's so often where it stops.

People disclocate their shoulders patting themselves on the back for purely symbolic gestures like these and then...what? People rapturously "own" their racist attitudes and then...what? People pay $10,000+for one of DiAngelo's seminars and then...what??

I've seen more of DiAngelo's videos than I can stomach, and she never actually says anything. Instead, she acts as if the fact that projecting her personal racism onto every white person she meets will make some of them angry or upset is profound. It's not profound, it's psychology 101.

And what's also psychology 101 is that people who feel guilty about their place in the world but don't want to make the sacrifices and efforts that might lead to a fairer world (that's not an attack, pretty much every human in the western world is in this category), will instead eat up a philosophy that offers "a lifelong personal journey" twhile making them feel like the hero of the story. That's what DiAngelo is selling.
