Well first, I don't think the governement should be in any way part of the decision making process, I completely see the dangers of that, and I'll take your use of "prosecute" here to simply mean act on rather than actual legal consequences, again that's obviously a terrifying and slippery slope.

But your point about liberty to determine what they believe is outdated in the 21st Century. The information available to you is so diverse, from sources that are so unverifiable, and fed to you by algorithms which are so opaque in their working, that you have very little control over the information you consume.

It's a significant effort, and a far bigger effort than most peoiple make, to diversify the points of view you absorb or to fact check the sources you trust. Some number of the people who stormed the Capitol sincerely believed that the democracy had been perverted and not simply because they were stupid. It's because the information landsacape is so perfectly suited to create echo chambers and to promote slanted visions of reality.

Sooner or later, we're going to have to recognise that we need help processing the information we receive. Either that, or we'll need to force social networks to be more accountable for the information on their platforms (which is arguably the same thing). The polarised view of the word that we're seeing now is only the beginning, and it's an inevitable consequence of the way that concepts like free speech have changed in the social media and "24 hour news cycle" age.

Today, anybody who knows their way around a computer can build a following of millions and tell them whatever they like, with a push of a button, without getting off the sofa. It's a whole new world.
