Well, I think I've pretty comprehensively clarified where I'm coming from over the past few days.π If you still think I'm arguing for lower standards for comedians something's gone horribly wrong.
1. I think Dave's openness to talk in good faith has been obious from the beginning. Thhat's why I've been saying this whole time that he'd be willing to do so if trans activists did the same for him. How they respond will be very telling. If anybody is unwilling to engage in good faith discussion, I'm pretty confident it's them.
2. No. If you really want to stretch it this far, that one joke "normalises" the notion of Oppression Olympics (an idea that has existed long before Dave Chappelle did his first stand up set by the way, and that has been "normalised" long before now). We've already agreed numerous times. that it was a bad joke. And though you say you're not judging the whole show by it, it's front and centre every time I ask you for clarification of your problem with the show.
But as for whether his jokes fell flat, again, I refer you to the fact that the special was wildly successful. I hear you when you say that you didn't like the joke, I'm not beginning to claim that you're wrong to feel that way, but you're asserting that your perspective outweighs millions of other people's without even seeming to conisder that you might be the one who needs to re-evaluate. This is, with all respect, a pretty arrogant way of looking at the situation.
3. You say it becomes material when other people run with it, but a) I've already said I don't believe it's fair to blame Dave for what somebody else says. B) there's always a risk somebody will use your words in a way that you don't intend (as I've said, I've heard it said that peolpe have done that with my work). And c) asking him to personally critique everybody who misinterprets his work is a pretty wildly unrealistic standard don't you think?
He hasn't even critiqued the members of the trans community who have been wilfully misinterpreting and cherry-picking his work. At Dave's scale, it's simply impossible to control how everybody perceives what you've done.
So yeah, I don't think I have much left to say on the topic. We'll see how thing unfold I guess. I truly hope that there's some productive discourse, but I strongly suspect there wont be. In my experience, trans activists (in fact, online activists of all flavours) aren't interested in listening to other people or even considering changing their minds. They want repentance and obedience. I don't think Dave will give them either.
