What do you mean "living by those traditions?" And how do you know which pre-slavery traditions are yours? Africa is a place of many cultures and traditions after all. And how far back in history do you go in order to uphold those traditions? 500 years? 1000?

Judging by your profile picture, it looks like you have a mixture of ethnicities. Do you live by the traditions of those other ethnicities too? If not, why focus on just those pre-slavery traditions?

I'm not saying that people should ignore their heritage if that's important to them (I think focusing on heritage is a little strange whatever the ethnicity of the person who does it, but to each their own), I'm saying that treating your skin as if it's definitive of who you are or were or must be is exactly the logic that racists have always used. Just framed slightly more positively.

Race isn't a real thing. It was invented to justify enslaving black people. That so many black people now see it as central to their identity is a bitter irony.
