What do you mean, "understand the holocaust"? The word genocide was coined by a Polish lawyer named Raphael Lemkin to describe Nazi war crimes that he was seeing with his own eyes. That's all there is to it. The fact that some Polish people were antisemitic has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
