What you describe in the first part of your reply is, sadly, human nature. Literally every single scandal or protest you care to name eventually died down and was forgotten. This isn't a white person problem, it's a human problem.

Outbursts of emotion and anger don't solve problems. They might bring attention for a short time, but it's the slow, hard, every day work which changes things. "Defund the police" is a poorly thought out platform that even the people who propose it can't agree on the meaning of.

Support of it ranges from abolishing the police entirely, which is hopelessly naive, to reducing the range of problems that police officers are called on to deal with, which is a good, long overdue idea that is badly and confusingly expressed by the word "defund". People didn't support "defund the police" because it sounds like, and was repeatedly presented as "Hey! Let's get rid of the police force. If you're being robbed or killed don't worry about it, we'll just police ourselves." Look what happend in CHAZ when they tried that.

You seem to be unshakably convinced that in the end, white people don't care about black people and are just acting out of shame or, most uncharitably of all, pandemic cabin fever. The narrative that white people are socialised to hate you seems so deeply entrenched that I wonder if there's anything that could be said to change your mind.

-----

When you say that tall pepole don't have power over everyone else, what do you mean by power? Do you mean advantage? Because I gave a number of examples of how my tallness clearly advantages me over other people. This isn't just my opinion, it's borne out by statistics.

This optiing in argunment still doesn't make sense. When I call myself black, I'm not subjugating my ethnicity as Afro-Caribbean. I'm not denying that I have Portuguese heritage somewhere down the line. I don't think it's fair to say that somebody who is quarter italian for example, is doing so either. Black, white, asian, these are all loose terms to define, basically skin colour. I'm not claiming anything else with the term and I don't think most people are. I think you'd be surprised by how little most people think about their race.

------

This is a very strange point to take offence at. The author, Rebecca, asked if all white people are white supremacists. This term is thrown around so lightly today that maybe it's lost all meaning, but white supremacists are people who believe that every other race is inferior, and should be killed or subjugated. Think Nazis or KKK. If you seriously believe that this is how all white people think, then frankly you've lost your grip on reality. It's clearly an overblown fear. No, all white pople are not white supremacists.

Your deer analogy would make sense if the question was should black people be afraid of the KKK, or should we be afraid of Nazis. The Nazis might not be the same force that they were in my grandfather's era, but anybody who would ascribe to those ideals is obviously still dangerous. But again, the vast majority of white people are not Nazis. What do we gain by pretending otherwise?

I've studied history, I just remember that we don't live there. History is instructive, but it's not definitive. And if you've been paying attention to the arrow of history, it's unbelievably clear that there's more evidence that we're leaving a dark period of American history than entering it. We had a black, two-term president four years ago, we'll soon have a black, female vice-president. The barriers to success for black people are lower than ever. We're entrepreneurs, politicians, leaders, even superheroes. Study our history and tell me that any of this was in any way conceivable even fifty years ago. Again, I'm not arguing that there's not further to go and more work to do, there clearly is. It just saddens me that you seem so determined not to see how far we've come.
