Yeah, as somebody who has always considered himself a liberal, it's tempting to 'no-true-Scotsman" my way out of this, but I think what you describe here is the inevitable if liberalism isn't kept in check.

Liberals are, I would argue, more likely to view people as groups, partly because caring for the needs of individuals is harder than caring for the needs of a group. Conservatives are more likely to look at people as individuals, partly because prioritising the agency of individuals is easier than prioritising the agency of groups.

Both of these viewpoints have merit. I think the problem, which maybe we're just phrasing in different ways, is that liberals and conservatives are supposed to act as counterbalances for each other's excesses. And lately, elements of both groups have spun completely of into the worst parts of their worldviews.
