Yeah, exactly. One of the roles I believe the law should perform is to mandate tolerance. Not condoning acts you don't like, not compelled speech, but tolerance. The requirement to let people live their lives if they aren't hurting anybody. Because doing so eventually leads to more open-mindedness.
Race relations aren't perfect today, obviously. But I think they're further along than they would be if racial mixing hadn't been mandated.
As I understand it, sexuality is also a protected characteristic under the civil rights act. Or rather, becuase sex is a protected characteristic, you can't treat somebody differently based other sex or the sex of their partner. It's a bit of a fudge though. Hopefully sexuality will be explicitly added.
