Yeah, fair enough. I don't think anybody likes to be criticised. And yeah, Matt has definitely taken a right-ish turn of late. He's a staunch free-speech advocate, as am I, and to be honest, that's become something the left is most likely to be attacking right now. Sadly that's pushed quite a few people to extremes recently.

But I think it's hard not to admit that there's a special flavour to the type of backlash one receives when writing about trans issues. JK Rowling is the clearest example of this. The abuse she's received is absolutely mind-boggling. This would be true pretty much whatever she'd said. But it's especially true when you weight it against what she actually said.

Rowling has become noticeably more anti-trans over the past few months. Her comments seem much more motivated by anger than a desire to talk about issues than they did a year ago. And she's much quicker to retweet unsubstantiated or in one case I know of, inaccurate information. But it's absolutely incredible that nobody has the self awareness to ask themselves,

"Hey guys? Do you think maybe all the death threats and misogynistic abuse and baseless attacks pushed her to a more hardline position than she originally held?"

This is what I see happening with lots of people on trans issues. There's only so much abuse you can dish out before it start coming back at you.
