Yeah, I absolutely couldn't agree more with this. I do my best to make this distinction (I hope I managed it in this article too), but in case there's any doubt, I see the distinction very clearly.
When you say you're not going to tell trans people what their lives have been like for them, I also completely agree. And I see how Dave's "ranking of oppression" could be interpreted this way. As I said, it was probably the part of the show I disliked the most.
But while I'm sure people are making excuses for him, I think the overall sentiment is that his special simply doesn't warrant the backlash it's received. So yes, it's perfectly valid to disagree with him. There are many points I disagree with too. But labelling him or the show as transphobic or demanding that it be removed from Netflix is ridiculous.
Also, let me be clear, I'm definitely not arguing that black people and women don't enjoy "PC protection". The introdution of the article even pokes fun at this fact. There's no doubt that there's a hierarchy of who it's permissible to make fun of in 2021, and Black people and women are definitely on it. My point was that the level of PC protection for trans people (or really trans ideology, I have no issue with protecting people) is far greater. To the extent where it's an issue. It's reached the level where any large scale conversation about trans issues that isn't wholly affirming of trans ideology is immediately demonised as hate speech. This is not a good thing.
On your last point, again, I completely agree, but then I don't really understand why you're taking the stance that you seem to be. You say that the burden when offence is taken should be on the person who's offended to demonstrate the harm done. Yes, absolutely. But do you think that that burden has been met in this case? Do you think that the level of outrage is proportional to the "harm" done by Dave's jokes? Do you think walkout protests and claims that anybody who wants the show to remain on Netflix "doesn't want trans people to be alive" are good starting points for constructive dialogue?
I don't think the issue is that Dave is unwilling to listen. I think the issue is that so little of the feedback has been fair, or even pertinent to the show. So much of it has simply been bad-faith accusations, blatant mischaracterisations, and ridiculous claims about how a few mediocre jokes are going to get trans people killed. I can completely understand why he's not receptive to feedback like that. I'm not even sure how he's supposed to be receptive to feedback like that.
