Yeah, I completely see the point you're making here. I guess my issue is just that these boundaries are so blurry that I'm not sure where to draw them around the space we're in now.
Many of the people who I'd be tempted to say were no longer "true liberals" would still (I think sincerely) claim that their actions were motivated by care for individuals (even the boundary between groups and individuals is trucky when we're talking about societal level policies).
I think I lean towards continuing to define these people as liberals because it makes me feel a greater degree of responsibility for the harm they're causing. It reminds me that this is how my ideals can be perverted if I'm not vigilant. And it clarifies my responsibility to speak up against them. I don't want to be tempted to wash my hands of them.
