Yeah, speech laws are definitely a minefield. But I think we can do some things without making perfect the enemy of good.

For example, I see no potential disadvantage to making it illegal to say "kill all Jews/women/black people/white people/trans people". If we can't figure out whether it should also be illegal to say something less extreme than that, then at least we've made it a little more difficult to lean on unarguably hateful rhetoric to make a point.

Banning this sentence doesn't prohibit bad or even hateful ideas, it doesn't make discourse or disagreement impossible. It just sends a message about the values of the society we live in and how we collectively feel about all the people living in it.
