Yeah, this is just about good writing. I actually included three examples of ordinary people being cancelled, but I’m sure many people didn’t even notice, because a story about Jane Doe or Joe Bloggs isn’t as relatable. There’s no wider context for the reader’s mind to grasp.
I used celebrities as examples because they provide a frame of reference. Their stories are already known and relatable, so I don’t have to waste time setting the scene. Writing always relies on this kind of broad stroke. But of course, the principles I’m discussing apply to everybody.
And yes, I’m not at all surprised that my guess was correct. It’s been correct of 100% of Rogan’s harshest critics in the comments here. I’m genuinely baffled by this ability to form such strong opinions on breadcrumbs of information. It’s not just you of course, I think it’s worryingly common. But it’s at the root of our problems with discourse.
