I'm not sure I agree about hate speech though. There's a line somewhere, that I think most reasonable people can see, where people should face consequences for the things they say. Of course, the problem is agreeing on that point, and I can certainly see the argument that it's too diifficult to define that line in legal terms.
Also, as you allude to here, the laws will always tend towards placating the most reactionary, fragile people. It's a tricky one.
