The original quote, from 1710, is: Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it. But I like Twain's version better. So the date refers to his version of the quote.
I always try to double check the sources of links. Especially links attributed to Twain (as pretty much every good quote is attributed to Twain😅)
