Yep, this largely captures what I'm saying.

The only point I'd add is that there are genuine ways, today, in which everyone is not playing a game of merit. Some black people face disadvantages that go beyond the ordinary pros and cons of individual bias, because up until 60 years ago, discrimination against black people was the law of the land in America.

So I do firmly believe that efforts should be made to level the playing field for those black people who live with the legacy of that racism in high-crime or extremely poor neighbourhoods for example. Of course, fixing these problems would also help poor, disenfranchised white people, which I think is unequivocally good.

It's often argued that the real issue in America is class and not race. And in 2021, this is broadly true. Regardless of race, the playing field is far from being level enough that we can reasonably talk about a game of merit. My only additional issue is that no other group of people have been so deliberately held back as African Americans.

So the point is, the issues caused by this should be fixed by uplifting those African Americans who are struggling. Not by lowering standards in the belief that they can't thrive if given a fair opportunity.
