Yes, I agree. But there is the greater danger of being so open minded that your brain falls out.
In a situation where people are being killed by the tens of thousands, and the person who is killing them cites a genocidal story in reference to women and children, the eagerness to extend infinite credulity treads very close to complicity.
Of course, you have the luxury of being "perfectly happy" to extend this credulity, because your life and the lives of your loved ones isn't in the slightest danger if you're wrong. I have to say, I find nothing virtuous in this kind of intellectual dispassion. In fact, I find it to be extremely ugly.
So yes, there is a danger of being too emotional in crisis situations. I understand that well. But frankly, I'd rather err on the side of being too quick to condemn genocidal psychopaths, whether Netanyahu or Hamas, than be endlessly willing to "entertain the idea" that their murderous rhetoric, that just happens to come while they're committing mass murder, is all just a big coincidence.
