Yes, you're completely right. Gun crime still occurs in the UK and Japan and many other places where guns are illegal. The problem is, you keep talking about zero.

This is the mistake that I think a lot of people make on this issue. Zero is undeniably unrealistic. But "less than ~400 million" is definitely realistic. "Harder for crazy people to get hold of" is definitely realistic. "Unable to kill 60 people per minute without regular training" is definitely realistic.

Thinking stalls on this issue because people seem to think that anything less than perfection isn't worth talking about. Take common sense steps to make tragedies like Uvalde and Parkland and Sandy Hook and Columbine harder, even if not impossible, to carry out. Start there.

Questions like "what makes young people want to commit mass murder?" are important. But most other developed nations have at least answered the question, "how do we stop those young people from getting hold of semi-automatic weapons?"
