You seem fixated on the idea of people hooking themselves to a particular individual’s star. If we were talking specifically about people who thought Donald Trump the man would save them, we’d be much closer to agreeing. My argument is simply that a vote for a president is also a vote for a whole system of policies which may well improve your life.

It’s easy to look through history and find stories about brave, hard-working people who succeeded against the odds. If you don’t see that for every one of them there are countless others who worked hard and didn’t make it, I’m not sure what to tell you. Nobody’s telling inspirational stories about the once who gave their all and didn’t make it. The world can’t function if everybody is a raving success.

This isn’t an either/or situation. I agree that people need to take responsibility for themselves. I agree that sitting back and waiting for a saviour is a doomed mindset. I also believe you can be a hard worker who needs society to work better for you. I believe that the system doesn’t treat everybody equally fairly. I believe some people have to work harder than others to get to the same place, and if governments can balance that out they should.
